U19 table tennis team win!
Chesham Grammar School's under-19 table tennis team dug deep to win their zone final in the Midlands on Sunday and progress to next month's South of England regional final in Bristol.
The team of Pranav, Matt, Elliot and Zach won two out of their three ties, leaving them locked on points with Marling school, from Gloucestershire, and Bromsgrove. Chesham finished top by virtue of individual match wins, thanks to a stunning 7-1 result against Bromsgrove.
Chesham started the competition in Wednesbury in style, beating local school Wood Green Academy 8-0, with Zach recovering from two games down to win his opening contest. The team then faced a tough match against a strong Marling side but battled hard and came agonisingly close to drawing 4-4. Crucially, they won three matches despite slipping to a 5-3 defeat, which helped in the final tally.
Chesham started their final fixture against Bromsgrove knowing they had to win to progress. They were under pressure after going 1-0 down but Pranav levelled the match at 1-1 and that signalled a momentum shift.
Zach and Elliot enjoyed comfortable wins to put Chesham in control and Pranav emerged on top after a gripping contest against Bromsgrove's number-one player in a breathtaking match full of high-class rallies. Straight-games wins for Matt and Elliot put Chesham 6-1 ahead and Zach rounded it off with another come-from-behind win.
We would like to say a big thank you to Zach's and Matt's dad for both providing transport to and from the venue and supporting all of the players on the day. Equally as important, not forgetting all of the hard work that Jon Abungan and Mariusz Konopacki have been putting in every week coaching our amazing junior players.
Thank you also to all of the team at Table Tennis England and Table Tennis England Development for arranging and running the event.
