Head's Blog

Dear Parent,

Year 9 parents visited the school last night for Parents' Evening and I look forward to seeing you all again next Thursday at our GCSE Options Evening. I know that last night presented the ideal opportunity, ahead of the options process, to discuss progress with subject staff which will allow parents and students to make informed choices. The next progress evening to take place this term will be for Year 12 and parents have received information this week about how to book appointments ahead of this event which takes place on Thursday, February 6th.

On Tuesday, all Year 10 and Year 7 students were off timetable all day, taking part in the National Enterprise Challenge. They had an enjoyable and valuable experience and it was fascinating to watch their ideas develop and to observe them working together throughout the day. There were some superb ideas and staff from the National Enterprise Challenge were hugely impressed by our students. Well done to the students and staff involved. It has also been a busy week in Careers with several presentations from employers taking place. Thank you to Mrs Beck for organising these. Students have had the opportunity to hear about degree apprenticeships while those in Years 7 and 8 learned about the vast range of careers on offer in the NHS. Information about work experience has been sent home to parents of those in Years 11 and 12 recently; please do read this carefully and encourage your child to take part. Any experience they can gain or shadowing they can undertake is valuable in so many ways. If you have any queries, please get in touch with us.

As you will know, our PTA, The Friends of CGS, raises a huge amount of money for the school and we have a very supportive parent body. This year, the FOCGS are organising a Fun Run on Sunday, 3rd May and we are hoping that lots of students and parents will take part, along with members of the local community. Information will follow but do save the date. My thanks to all the parents involved whose enthusiasm and commitment have enabled the FOCGS to get this event organised.

We have been offered the option of discounted tickets for the Saracens v Harlequins match on Saturday, 28th March at 3pm. This is taking place at the iconic Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. As a Spurs fan, I have been to matches at the new stadium several times and I can tell you that it really is worth a visit! Tickets will be issued on a 'first come, first served' basis and are priced at £25 for adults and £14 for U16s. Details, should you wish to purchase any, are attached. Also attached is a letter which has been or is being sent to parents by all of the secondary Headteachers in Bucks. It contains information on two issues which, sadly, are affecting young people and their families and schools up and down the country, namely drugs and knife crime. Please do take some time to read the letter. As parents and teachers, it is probably the case that we know much less about these issues than many of our children or students do and so we hope that the information will be of use. As always, if you have any concerns about your child, please do get in touch.

Happy 12th birthday to the following Year 7s with whom I met this week: Archer, Laurence, Lucy, Mollie, Bryony and Grace.

As you may know, our school show this year is School of Rock and this will take place at The Elgiva in Chesham from Tuesday 11th to Friday 14th February. Please do come along and support the students who have been working incredibly hard since the start of the school year. It promises to be an excellent evening and one I know you will enjoy. Ticket information was sent out earlier in the week.

Finally, can I ask that parents who collect their child from school at the end of the day not only park considerately and drive carefully but also turn off their engines while waiting for their child. Some parents are parked in roads around the school for 15 minutes at the end of the day and in some cases, their car engine is running for the whole time. The environment is something our students feel very passionately about and it would be good for us all to be doing what we can to reduce our impact on it. Thank you.

With best wishes for a relaxing weekend,

Annmarie McNaney
