Year 12 Houses of Parliament and Supreme Court Trip
This Wednesday (24/04/24), year 12 A level Politics students visited the Supreme Court and Houses of Parliament in London. We took the Tube to Westminster, where we were led on a guided tour of the Supreme Court courtrooms, getting to sit in the judges and defendants’ seats, as well as learning all about the proceedings and differences of our Supreme Court compared to others. Following this, we were lucky enough to sit in on a court case between Tesco and a trade union, enriching our knowledge of the unique Supreme Court and legal practices. Next, we were given a tour of the Houses of Parliament. Walking through the House of Lords and meeting MPs in Central Lobby, we were able to learn all about the vast history of this renowned political institution. Afterwards, we climbed up to the Visitors’ Gallery and watched Defence Secretary Grant Shapps giving a ministerial statement on defence spending in the House of Commons. The debates that ensued, along with a workshop that we subsequently took part in, further developed our knowledge of Parliament, pressure groups and British democracy. Overall, it was a highly engaging experience that deepened our understanding of the relationships between the branches of Government, and the impact they have on our political system.
