Friday 24th June INSET day
I am going to start with a reminder that next Friday, 24th June, is our final INSET day of the year so students do not need to attend, with the exception of some students in Year 12 who have an exam that day. Students will therefore finish for the weekend on Thursday and return on Monday 27th June.
Vertical tutoring returns
As I mentioned in my newsletter a couple of weeks ago, we are returning to vertical tutoring in September. We are very excited about this, having really missed it for the last two years, though we know that two year groups in the school, years 7 and 8, have never experienced it and that year 9s were in vertical tutor groups for just half of their time in year 7. We also have over 40 students who joined us from other schools in year 12 in September. We are approaching this accordingly and there is a great deal of planning going on to ensure a smooth transition for those who have experienced vertical tutor groups before and a really positive introduction to vertical tutoring for those for whom it will be totally new. Part of the training day for staff next week is focused on this and the plan is for year 6s to be able to meet their vertical tutor group when they come for their transition day in early July. We will be sharing further details of how this will work with students in the next couple of weeks.
Activities week
Can I remind parents that the week beginning July 11th is activities week for all year groups currently in the school. The emphasis is on having fun and we very much hope that the visits and activities planned will allow the students to make memories in a way which has not been possible for so long and enjoy themselves ahead of the long summer break. Please can you make any payment via ParentPay as soon as possible. Thank you.
75th anniversary party, Friday July 8th
I am very much looking forward to seeing and celebrating with lots of you at our anniversary party for parents on 8th July. I am very much hoping for a sunny evening! Tickets are available on ParentPay for those of you who are planning to come and who have not yet bought a ticket. I would hate you to miss out!
Athletics successes
Last Saturday, a group of around 30 CGS students travelled to Milton Keynes for the Bucks Schools Athletics Championships. They had a great day, not just in terms of their enjoyment but in terms of their successes. Well done to all those who took part. There were some superb performances and all the students enjoyed the event and 'gave their all' for the school. Thank you. Special mention to those who won their events and who are thus now County Champions. They are:
Callum in year 9 Junior Boys 800m
Oscar in year 11 Intermediate Boys 400m
Kamal in year 10 Intermediate Boys high jump. Well done also to Joe in year 11 and Sean in year 10 who came second and third respectively in a clean sweep for CGS!
Lucas in year 7 Junior Boys high jump
Toby in year 9 Junior Boys long jump
Alex in year 11 Intermediate Boys discus and hammer
On Monday, a group of students from years 9 and 10 travelled to Nuneaton, Warwickshire for the Midlands English Schools Athletics B Final. Our Intermediate Boys had qualified for this and been invited to take part. They did brilliantly and Mr Spittle who accompanied them said it was clear as the day progressed that something very special was happening. There was a real sense of teamwork and each individual's effort contributed to a superb win for our team in a very competitive field. There were three other Bucks schools in the competition: Waddesdon, Dr Challoner's Grammar and Great Marlow. Congratulations to all those involved. From year 10: Conor, Joe K, Joe B, Kez, Will, Ed, Euan, Archie, Adam, Tristan, Kamal, Sean, Luca and Manish and from year 9: Enzo and Callum. Thanks to Mr Spittle who is obviously very proud of everyone in the team.
Webinars for parents by the Charlie Waller Trust
For some years, we have been working with the Charlie Waller Trust, a mental health charity which provides support for young people and those who work with them, such as parents and teachers. The CWT is offering a number of live webinars for parents on topics such as 'The Teen Brain', 'Sleep' and 'Perfectionism'. They are all presented by mental health trainers, speakers and guest speakers who come from a wide range of professions, including education, psychology and nursing. Some CGS staff have attended CWT sessions in the past and we can recommend these; they are useful and informative. You can find out more about the sessions here - Charlie Waller Trust
Well done to...
Elana in year 8 who has passed Grade 5 Modern with Merit and to students in year 10 who have been awarded a Gold certificate in the National Biology Challenge sat by all CGS year 10s. They are: Madeleine, Lex, Elliot, Orlaith, Neel, Joe, Jacob and Simeon. Well done. I met with students this morning who have accrued over 200 House points so far this year, which is excellent. Well done to: Christine, Bethan and Grace in year 9, Honey and Anya in year 8 and Liam, Veer, Tali, Max in year 7.
Sport this week
It has been another busy week of sporting fixtures. The 9C and 10A rounders teams won all four matches last night against Tring, Kings Langley and JFK schools while the tennis team in year 10 beat Amersham 14-2. We have had cricket matches for boys and girls with the U13 girls losing a close game to Pipers Corner and the 9B boys to a strong John Hampden team. The schedule for fixtures and lunchtime sessions next week is below.
With best wishes for a relaxing weekend,
Best wishes,
Annmarie McNaney
