Dear Parent
Today has been a staff training day. We spent the first part of the morning working together in relation to vertical tutoring which is making a welcome return to CGS. Next week, students will spend a couple of tutor times in their vertical groups so that current students can get to meet each other ahead of the arrival of year 6s for their induction day the following week.
Public exams come to an end
After a pretty tumultuous two years, year 11s have now finished their GCSE examinations, while A levels finish next week. What a two years it has been for both years 11 and 13. The very last GCSE paper was yesterday. As it was physics, the whole year group was involved and it was really good to be there as they emerged from the hall, in uniform for the very last time, to see the relief and euphoria on their faces. It has been a long, hard slog for both year groups with the exam season running over a six week period. We wish them all a very happy summer of freedom ahead!
Well done to .....
Every year, we run a Creative Writing Competition for year 8. Congratulations to the winners, who each receive a book token: First Prize - Tommy, Second Prize - Anya, Third Prize Amy
Ollie in year 12 completed the London to Brighton Bike Ride last Sunday in aid of WaterAid, cycling the 54 miles in just under three and a half hours and raising his target of £250. Well done. Two of our year 11s are cycling to Land's End to raise money for cancer charities and have set themselves a target of £2,000. Good luck to Jamie and Matthew. Anyone who would like to sponsor them can do so here: Cycle to lands end for cancer.
Last weekend, many of our year 10s undertook the qualifying expedition for the Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award. Well done to everyone involved and thank you to the accompanying staff, Mr Hayes, Mrs Maishman, Mrs Dax and Mr Bradbury.
Art Exhibition
As many of you will know, the art and photography work our students produce is exceptional. Every year, we hold an exhibition of the GCSE and A level pieces. You are all warmly invited to the exhibition for this year which will take place next Friday, 1st, from 4pm to 7.30pm. Click here for the flyer.
House Performing Arts Competition
One of the most enjoyable events in the summer term in any normal year is House Performing Arts and I am delighted to see this making a return this year. Students have been rehearsing for some weeks and I am very much looking forward to seeing their performances on Monday 4th July. It takes place at 7pm in the main school hall. Tickets will be available via Eventbrite from 5.30pm today. Click here to book your tickets.
75th Anniversary Party ..... final call
This is the last chance to purchase tickets for our 75th Anniversary Party for parents on Friday July 8th. This will be a wonderful way to celebrate this milestone in the school's history as well as the end of the school year, after such a long time of not being able to be together. Tickets can be purchased on ParentPay until Monday 27th.
Click here for full details. I look forward to seeing you there!
Sports at CGS this week
We are coming to the end of the fixtures for this year. Our U13 girls beat The Beaconsfield School in cricket, while the year 10 boys lost narrowly to AGS and to DCGS. We have had some other excellent matches this week v DCGS, with the year 9s playing really well and a number of the 8B team playing their first match for the school. Well done! The U13 boys started their Division 2 tennis campaign with a win v Sir Henry Floyd Grammar School. We hosted the U13 rounders tournament on Wednesday. Many thanks to Miss Cowley who organised it. Both our teams made it to the Cup play-offs; the B team lost in the semi-final and the A team lost by the slimmest of margins - half a rounder - in the final.â Finally, the year 10 A and B rounders teams played several games this week, winning four, drawing one and losing one. Well done to everyone who has represented the school this week.
